Located at the base of Mt. The arts have been a fundamental element in shaping the town of Carbondale. Members of the community first deemed the arts to being imperative to the town’s livelihood in the early 1970’s when they founded “Carbondale Arts” to promote its importance. Today, the arts continue to be at the heart of Carbondale. There are over 200 creative organizations and artists that make up the Creative District. Downtown Carbondale is particularly known as an art and culture hot spot. There are so many places to explore such as art galleries, performing art studios, exhibits and sculpture gardens. In addition, there is a series of cultural events organized every year to promote the appreciation of the arts. Perhaps the most renowned is the Mountain Fair Festival, which attracts thousands of visitors from all over the country to Carbondale. The event celebrates the town’s local artists as well as those from out of town and brings together more than 150 vendors exhibiting handmade works of art including paintings, photography, glass, crafts, accessories, jewelry, pottery, clothing and more.
Don’t miss First Fridays once a month, which is also a celebration of the arts and an opportunity for the whole community to come together. There’s no better time to take a walk down Main Street, which is hopping with live music and entertainment.
